Talking Points for Ronald B. Smith Jr.
1. The jury recommended life without the possibility of parole by a vote of 7-5. The judge overrode the recommendation making the sentence illegal based on the U.S. Constitution.
2.Due to ineffective assistance of counsel the filing deadline for the Rule 32 appeal was missed. The attorney was arrested at Holman for possession of illegal narcotics.
3. Alabama has no clear and carefully documented execution protocols.
Mary's House will hold a vigil on Dec 8th from 11:30am to 1:00 pm in front of the county courthouse (Birmingham) at Arrington & Woods, N. The vigil will happen even if - as we hope - the killing does not. If the state does kill Mr Arthur we will hold a short requiem vigil at 5:55pm at Dr. King's statue in Kelly Ingram Park, because Alabama kills at 6:00 pm.
