Mary's House Seeks Caretaker

Mary's House Catholic Worker in Birmingham, Alabama seeks live-in community member to serve as House Caretaker or Hospitaller. 
 
We're looking for the right person (or people!) to come live at Mary's House to help us maintain the premises and enable us to continue offering hospitality to our neighbors in need.

Overview:


This Volunteer Caretaker lives at Mary’s House Catholic Worker as a primary residence and provides a stable presence in the house.  The caretaker helps to maintain the general cleanliness and order of the house.  This person participates in regular communication with Mary’s House Board representatives, which includes regular check-ins as well as timely reporting of any issues that need attention (pest control, repairs, etc.) The caretaker will arrange with board members if they need to be absent from the house for overnight or longer. The caretaker lives at Mary’s House rent free, with utilities (water, power, gas) provided.  WIFI is also provided.

The Hospitaller position encompasses the same responsibilities and duties as the Caretaker, but involves a deeper commitment to the mission and work of hospitality and participating in the larger Catholic Worker movement.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Vacuums common areas weekly

  • Helps maintain cleanliness of bathroom areas (with the cooperation of guests)

  • Brings in house mail and places in designated basket

  • Puts trash can out on street on designated days

  • Puts away clean dishes and straightens the house after First Friday potlucks

  • Reports maintenance issues to Mary’s House Board in a timely manner and is available (when possible) to let in repair people

  • Reports any other household problems to Mary’s House Board, e.g. if there are repeated rule violations by guests 

  • Meets with Mary’s House Board members to provide general overview of house activities and any needs

  • Follows Mary’s House Safety and Conduct Rules

 

Qualifications:

  • Good communication skills

  • An understanding  of Mary’s House mission and work

  • Commitment to cleanliness and order

  • Physical ability to complete regular chores

  • Willingness to engage with guests in a friendly manner

  • Able to commit to living at Mary's House for 1 Year
